What is listed here

A dive boat sells in one of two ways: as a vessel, or as the operation the vessel runs. Both appear on this page — a RIB on a trailer with a compressor, a hard boat with a licensed passenger capacity and a berth, a day catamaran with a charter book already on it — so read the listing for what comes with the hull.

What to check before you make an offer

  • Your own survey. Commission an out-of-water survey rather than relying on the seller's. It is the cheapest part of the purchase and the only part that prices the hull honestly.
  • Engine hours and service history. Ask what the hours are, what the service intervals were, and what a repower would cost. On a working dive boat, engines are a consumable with a schedule, not a fixed asset.
  • Certification and passenger capacity. A hull licensed to carry twelve paying divers in one country is not automatically licensed anywhere else. Recertifying under a new flag can cost more than the boat.
  • Berth, mooring or trailer. A boat with nowhere to live is a boat with a monthly bill you have not been quoted yet. Ask whether the berth or mooring transfers.
  • The dive fit-out. Tank racks, ladder, freshwater rinse, shade, emergency oxygen, first aid kit, VHF and an in-date liferaft. Fitting a bare hull out for diving is a real line in the budget.
  • Where it is now. Delivery, shipping, import duty and re-flagging turn a good price a long way away into an ordinary price at home.

What it costs to run

Fuel is the visible cost and rarely the largest one. Budget for moorings, insurance, an annual haul-out and antifoul, engine servicing, crew, and the survey the insurer will want. A boat that pays for itself in high season still has to be kept afloat through the months it does not.

Selling a dive boat

Owners publish their own listings — create a listing, describe the vessel and its paperwork, and buyers contact you directly. Also for sale: dive centers and dive equipment.
